Black Theatre Forum

The Black Theatre Forum (BTF) was formed in 1985 as an umbrella organisation of African, Caribbean and Asian theatre companies, aimed at stimulating the development of Black theatre in Britain, attracting wider audiences, and helping to create the conditions for greater equality of opportunity. The networking vocation of this theatre organisation, and the wide range of its past activities makes the Black Theatre Forum archive a vital resource in the study of Black theatre in Britain.

Nitro/Black Theatre Co-op

Nitro Theatre Company (NTC), formally known as Black Theatre Co-operative, was formed in 1979 to give opportunities to Black actors, writers and directors. In 1996, Felix Cross MBE became Artistic Director and three years later the company changed its name to Nitro Music Theatre, marking a new phase in its exploration of contemporary Black British musical theatre. On 31/03/2015, Felix Cross resigned from his position and the company changed its name to nitroBEAT.

motiroti

motiroti (MR) was an internationally acclaimed arts organisation formally established in 1990. The company evolved from a collaboration between artists Keith Khan and Ali Zaidi, but was officially closed down in 2014. Based in London, motiroti was dedicated to developing multi-faceted projects, which explored diversity in all its forms. Its work centred on perceptions of identity and was led by participation, new technology, and design.

Trading Faces Online Exhibition

Trading Faces Recollecting Slavery is a consortium project, devised by Future Histories in 2007 with contributions from Talawa Theatre Company, the Victoria & Albert Museum Theatre Collections, and The National Archives (A4A Programme).

Future Histories’ contribution to the project consisted in the design of an online exhibition on the legacy of the Transatlantic Slave Trade in British performing arts and society. The aim was to investigate narratives of slavery in black British performance archives, as well as issues related to black aesthetics and politics. Enter the exhibition here.
